Snow Day!

Did anyone else do this as a child when you woke up to a foot of snow?

Our radio would announce school closings and delays, so

if we opened our eyes to a significant amount of white in the morning,

we’d eagerly race downstairs in our cozy pajamas

and listen to the static-y CD player plunked on a stool in the kitchen

—the only way 6 kids could all fit around and listen at once!

If we heard the words “2-hour delay” or “cancelled”

you’d better believe there was an unnecessary amount of whooping, hollering, and cheering.

We probably figured our teachers were pretty bummed, sitting at home thinking

“dang-it! Now we have to push the Geography test to tomorrow!”

I can assure you, as someone who worked at a school,

the teachers are not bummed.

Okay, I guess I shouldn’t make any promises. But as far as I know, even though the students will likely be out of control the next day, the teachers are pretty excited to have a delay or a full snow day when it comes, and I am too.

I no longer work at a school, but as a college student, my reaction now is about the same as our reactions I described above 😉

Why? Perhaps for the same reasons as when I was in school:

It’s an unexpected (for the most part) day off

Although it may have been hoped for or assumed, it’s not guaranteed, which is cause for appreciation when it happens.

I don’t have to get dressed

On a blustery winter day, there’s one thing that sounds cozier than no other, and it’s lounging in comfortable pajamas or sweat pants and the biggest hoodie I can find. A snow day brings the perfect opportunity to do so.

Hot drinks

I love them, and I can think of no time and place better to enjoy them than at 8:30 AM (and 9:30 AM… and 12:30 PM… and 3:00 PM… you know.) on the couch, under a blanket, with snow swirling outside the window.

It’s easy to be productive

I get to catch up on things I haven’t had time to do throughout the week. I’m already up early, so I have the whole day to work on it! …IF I feel like it. I may just choose to lounge 🙂

Cozy

Some may argue, but one of the best things in life is coziness… and snow days are just that.

I get to stay at home

I love going to class, running errands, etc. but staying home is one of my favorite things!!

It’s white all around.

Hooray for the beauty of nature!

Hooray for a clean slate!

Hooray for pine branches that plop a drift on your head!

No, but really, I love the clean look of a white yard, a white driveway (well, as long as I don’t have to drive on it), white trees, and white horizon. I gaze at and appreciate a WHITE WORLD as much as I gaze at and appreciate richly colored sunsets, deep blue lakes, and rolling green hills. To be able to look out of any window and see only white everywhere is soothing, settling, and cleansing to my mind, and it’s always great to experience that “mental reset.”

As I write this, I am realizing that I’m giving a strong impression that I am someone who is mostly passionate about bumming around and who loves staying home from work… And you know what? I think that is OHH-KAY!! 😉

Thanks for reading!
